Front façade of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome. Photograph by Daderot, Wikimedia Commons.
Look beyond the grand façade to discover ancient nave mosaics, a gilded ceiling and richly decorated chapels. Santa Maria Maggiore stands on the Esquiline Hill and is one of Rome’s four papal basilicas. Suggested visit: 45–60 minutes; allow extra time for museum areas.
Cover shoulders and knees and allow time for security screening. A wheelchair access ramp is available; ask staff about access to side chapels.
