Two packages with the same number of nights can leave you with a very different time in the city. If one lands late and the other at noon, and if the return flight departs in the morning or evening, you are actually buying a different amount of useful time. Therefore, it is worth comparing an urban vacation also by the hours you can travel, and not just by the price and number of stars.

Start at the approximate time of arrival at the hotel. It includes landing, exiting the terminal, collecting luggage if required, waiting for transport and driving up to the door. Then write down when to leave the hotel on the day of the return, in accordance with the flight instructions and the transfer you have chosen. It is not necessary to guess minute accuracy: a reasonable range is more useful than a sharp number that seems certain but is not.

Now counting useful windows. In the following example all hours are imaginary for the purpose of illustrating the method, and the numbers are not a description of an existing flight or destination. We placed two full days with nine hours of scheduled activity in each, without counting late dinners as time to visit the sites.

Time Component Package A Package B
Arrival Day Hotel arrival at 22:00: no time for sightseeing Arrival at 14:00: Four hours you planned to take advantage of
Two full days. 18 hours planned. 18 hours planned.
Day of Return Departure at 06:00: no time for sightseeing Departure at 15:00: four hours after getting ready
Useful amount of time in the example 18 hours 26 hours

The gap is eight hours, although the number of nights is the same. If package B is more expensive, ask if the add-on is worth almost an extra day of activities. There is no rule here that says the longer package is always good: a very early morning flight can be tiring, and you may prefer to arrive at night and sleep. The goal is to see the difference and buy it consciously.

To illustrate a price for time, let's say just for the purposes of calculating that package A costs 3,600 shekels for the passenger vehicle, and a package for 4,160 shekels. Divided into scheduled hours, you get 200 shekels per hour in package A and 160 in package B. This is not a way to measure the value of the entire vacation; it is an auxiliary measure that reveals a situation in which a higher overall price buys much more time in the city.

Check the transfer as well. In Budapest, for example, line 100E connects the airport to the city centre. Prague has public transport options that connect to the metro as well as other transfer services. At any destination, the last stop is not necessarily your hotel. The rest of the way should be added and service checked upon actual landing, rather than using a general promise of a "short drive to the center".

After calculating the time, adapt it to the plan. Those who want two museums with set hours of operation need proper day windows, and not just a free evening. Those who come to restaurants and hang out may give the evening a higher weight. Write down three things that are important to you and see if anyone actually gets into the windows available.

On the day of departure, find out in advance what to do with the luggage and what the room policy is. It should not be assumed that a late exit is included. If you leave luggage at the hotel and return to take it, this return is part of the time that needs to be allocated before leaving for the field. The last activity should be one that can be completed comfortably.

Keep the comparison next to the package details: known total price, useful hours, hotel address and important terms. When one of the flights or transfers changes, rethink. This way you can choose between two similar offers based on the vacation you will actually have.

Sources for transport examples: BKK Airport Express in Budapest; Prague Airport Public transport. The table, the prices, the allocation of hours and the calculation are merely an imaginary system example, neither a bid nor guaranteed transfer times.

Free hours and hours worth paying for.

Not every hour in the city contributes to a vacation in the same way. Make a separate list of hours appropriate for an internal visit, meal, walk, and rest. Four hours in the evening may be excellent for a couple's vacation, but they do not replace four hours a day when the main activity takes place only at certain hours. The activity windows should be verified for your date before assessing their value.

Also check the price of the day added outside the package. Time in the city can require more meals, luggage and transportation. On the other hand, it may be possible to visit the place you wanted without adding a night. Compare the addition with what you will actually do, rather than with a theoretical number of hours that you would probably prefer to spend at rest.

On a short vacation, home preparation affects the first day. If you arrive without an accessible address and without a decision on the way to the hotel, part of the window that should have been available is dedicated to orientation. There is no need to set every step, but it is worth closing the arrival sequence and deciding which short activity is near the lodging.

Also compare what is needed the day before takeoff. Flights that allow for early arrival may require departure from home at a time that is not suitable for every passenger. There is no formula that converts fatigue into weights. You can simply specify in comparison what a calm opening day is for you and what alternative requires to be taken down.

Example scenario: Check the selection before committing

In an example of planning, two proposals leave it for several hours in the city, but in one of them in the evening and in the other there is another morning. If the purpose is a welcome visit during the daytime, the morning may be more useful. If the goal is recreation and meals, the choice can be reversed. Write next to any one action window you really want to perform; a window that has no desired use does not have to justify a higher price.

Work Questions and Practical Answers

Decision Point What to ask How to Advance
Type of hours Is the extra time appropriate for the main activity for which you are traveling? Match any one desired activity window and not a list of options. Free time is helpful when it allows something that is important to you and in the conditions under which you can enjoy it.
Additional time spent What meals and travel should be added to take advantage of the window? Only list expenses generated by the extra window, without counting components included in the order again. That way, you can figure out the extra cost of time for you.
Tired on arrival What would you like to do in practice after the sequence from home to the room? Build a relaxed version for the first day and decide what can be added if there is power. Don't think every hour after landing like it's going to be a full time trip.
Cargo on the last day Do I need to return to the hotel before leaving for the airport? Put the return to the baggage hold and exit into orbit. Recent activity that is not in this direction may greatly reduce the useful window.

Worksheet for individual program selection

Open two pages, one for each alternative you are considering. On each page, write down where you sleep, what the main morning is, where you intend to eat, and how you return at the end of the day. Mark the things that have not yet been checked with a color or a fixed word, so that they do not mix with decisions that can already be relied upon. In the first stage there is no need to order anything.

Now select one detail that changes between the options and pass it through all day. Another accommodation location may change the morning and evening; longer activity may move the meal and the way back. Update the implications before adding another idea to the list. Thus the comparison remains between two possible vacations, rather than between two wish lists.

Finally, let each passenger read the day and mark one moment that they are expecting and one moment that may be cumbersome. Try to solve the difficulty without removing everything that is important to another person. Keep a full version and a short version of the program, and return to them after checking hours and services for dates you have chosen.
